He fought, he said, because so many others fought for equality before him. Game on. A statement from Missouri athletic director Mack Rhoades and head football coach Gary Pinkel released after Wolfe's announcement said football activities would resume Tuesday. The two men addressed the media Monday afternoon.
There's no script for what all of us have been dealing with. And I think, certainly, it's been also a great learning experience for everyone involved," said Rhoades. With something like this, football became secondary," Pinkel said.
About 30 players made their thoughts known Saturday night in a tweet posted by Missouri's Legion of Black Collegians. Missouri football players strike amid racism protest Though the protests garnered support from former Mizzou football players -- including former defensive tackle Lucas Vincent and Michael Sam , the first openly gay player to be drafted in the NFL -- at least one former player slammed the players for what he called "a pure lack of responsibility and ungratefulness.
Complaints follow incidents. The protests drew support off the gridiron as well, with two graduate student groups calling for walkouts at the university on Monday and Tuesday in solidarity with protesters. A group of concerned faculty also offered its support, saying it would stand in solidarity with the students. Students are encouraged to check email for information from their professors," said a statement distributed via social media.
The University of Missouri Faculty Council on University Policy issued a statement expressing "deep concern with regard to the lack of communication and the growing uncertainty about the leadership of the University of Missouri system and MU campus. Columbia mayor: Resignation won't solve race issues In October, a person used feces to draw a swastika on a wall in one of the residence halls, and in the spring, there was a "similar use of anti-Semitic language and symbolism" at another residence hall, according to Residence Halls Association President Billy Donley , who said in a letter he was upset that most students were unaware of the incident.
In another recent incident, a group of African-American students complained that a school safety officer didn't aggressively pursue an apparently drunken white student who disrupted their gathering using a racial slur. Please log in, or sign up for a new account to continue reading.
Kevin Bell takes down letters, some of which were reused, Nov. The Columbia School Board decided to change the name of the field Sept. Mizzou Arena was once an example of what can go wrong when a building name is sold to the highest bidder.
When the building now known as Mizzou Arena opened in , Paige Laurie was a recent graduate of the University of Southern California and an heir to one of the largest fortunes in the country. The Lauries, both Missouri natives who had raised their daughter in Columbia, used the leverage from their donation to name the building after Paige, who had never had any formal ties to MU.
Laurie later surrendered her diploma, and MU was forced to change the name of the arena rather than have it continue to be named after a known cheater. Paige Sports Arena became Mizzou Arena before the Tigers even had a chance to play a conference game there. Missouri fans can look back and laugh at the brief episode now, but the Laurie incident was in some ways an early, PG-rated precursor to an issue that now seems to come up more than ever: Stadiums and other buildings on university campuses that are named after people are coming under scrutiny.
Many institutions have had to either resist or embrace change in response to activists who point out flaws in the legacy of an individual represented on campus. Until the past several decades, names were more likely to be assigned to honor someone who had not necessarily given money — a historical figure, university official or accomplished alumnus.
If something was named after a donor, it was still more an informal gesture of thanks than a written pact. What's happened in the last few decades is that it's become much more contractual in the form of selling time-limited naming rights to buildings and other sports arenas and things on university campuses. Once schools realized the lucrative potential of commodifying naming rights, it became more common to see places named after donors. It opened in after Edwin W.

As one of only six public universities in the country with medicine , veterinary medicine and law all on one campus, MU provides Missouri with an educated work force of doctors, veterinarians and lawyers. This school is to be a school both of science and of its applications: its purpose is to teach knowledge and art -- first to know and then to do, and to do in the best manner. Early curricula were focused on the state's mining industry and its immediate technological needs, but, by the end of the 's, courses of study included mining, civil, mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineering and chemistry, metallurgy, mathematics, physics, and geology.
The School expanded slowly in the first 50 years. Buildings were constructed and a reputation as a training ground for competent practitioners was developed.
